Hardly Footloose

The news ran a story this week about new rules that have been put in place for area high school dances. The media likened these rules to the movie Footloose. You remember, don't you? Kevin Bacon's character moves to a small town where music and dancing has been banned.

The district issued the following quidelines for school dances:
  • Dance in an upright position with both feet on the floor.
  • No thrusting or simulating sexual acts or gestures.
  • No touching of the breasts, buttocks, and genital areas.
  • No lifting or pulling clothing.
  • Hands must be outside fabric at all times.

Seems to me that there has been a whole lot more going on at the high school dances than music and dancing. The media should be ashamed for criticizing a group of educators and students who are merely telling students that they are expected to behave at a school function. Are these rules banning music and dancing? Certainly not. The big question we parents should be asking is what has been going on at these dances that such no brainer, should be obvious, just plain behave and respect yourself, guidelines be set in print.

  1. Boy,am I glad my children are in their 40's.

We used to check under the bleachers when we chaperoned at school dances....but that was minor because they were just kissing. The ones we found, anyway.

I feel sorry for the youth of today that some feel they have to keep pace with TV and movies.

  2. So sad on all fronts. Another one of the many reasons I have chosen to homeschool my children. ;)
    Have a wonderful weekend.
